Post WAR Impressions
Thought I'd start a new thread for my thoughts.

Last time I posted I was only about 6 hours into the game, and still had a lot of questions about how things worked.

Not saying that I now know everything, but I know a lot more than I did last time I talked about the game.

So here goes...

I am currently playing a Zealot, which I am liking very much. I have tried out the Witch Elf some, and the class seems to have a lot of potential. I'm also curious to try a Squig Herder, just cause they look kind of fun, but so far I'm very pleased with my selection of the Zealot.

I really like the paint by numbers questing system. I love how your quests show up on your map. It reminds me of how I'd hit up thottbot and mark all my quests on my map in wow, then go do them in an order that made sense. It's just nice that the game does this for me.

Now, questing isn't all that important in this game, as there are so many other fun ways to get experience. I am enjoying the PvP in the game. As a healer I seem to have a lot more weapons than I did in WoW. It seems a lot harder for the opponent to just blow me up.... I have so much survivability. This makes it a lot more fun to heal in Scenarios than it did to heal in WoW battlegrounds.

The scenarios are great too. The first one I played was very Arathi Basin like, it has 3 flags, capture and hold them, etc... lots of fun. Also there's a time limit on the games and points seem to accrue much faster than in wow. Each game lasts about 8 minutes, which compared to roughly 20-25m in wow. I like the faster pace. Nothing is worse than sticking it out with a shit ass group for a half hour, just to queue again for a half hour, just to suck again. At least in WAR if you get a bad group you know it'll be over soon.

Also on the same point, Scenario queueing is great. You can do it from anywhere, and usually it respawns you where you queued, although sometimes you'll respawn after the scenario in a city near by, not sure why, probably a bug.

Now that I've reached Teir 2 (which started at rank 12) I've been playing the Mourkin Temple mostly. Which is much different than any wow battleground. Basically there's an amulet, holding the amulet gives your team points, not having it is bad, kill the guy with the amulet, etc... it's pretty fun. Oh and the amulet, over time, starts to kill the holder.

So the scenarios are great, the queue times have been relatively short, and the games are fun. I usually win about 60% of the time, but even a loss is pretty fun since the games are short.

Back in the regular game my favorite part is the Public Quests. I enjoy clicking on a button on my UI which shows me any parties near by and what they're doing. If there's a PQ party going on in a chapter I still need influence in I'll join up. Also, the PQs give you a reward (sometimes if you're lucky/good) at the end if you successfully complete it. I got my first purple item this way. Also the influence rewards per chapter seem to be on par if not better than the Renown rewards from ranking up in renown. So as I progress through the world I try to max out my influence in each chapter.

The other day i wandered around w/ a group of people I PQ'd with and we just kind of cut through the country side, looking for neat shit. We stumbled upon a big ole castle up in the hills, and worked our way to the top floor where we were handed our ass by a giant dog looking thing. It was really neat, and I just didn't expect to see something so neat in an obscure part of the map.

Now, as for combat, it's mostly pretty good. I figured out what my issue was from previous. Basically a spell's animation is pretty set, so you hit cast, 2s later it will finish. Regardless of whether or not you get pushback from being attacked. This is very frustrating at times, cause I'm a visual person, if I see the spell finish I assume it's finished. This causes problems in PvP when I cast my big heal, cause it appears to go off, I move, and sure enough I interupt my cast cause it wasn't finished.

Sure I could go off the cast bar, which i've been trying to do, but when shit gets hectic I still fail sometimes.

Other than the animations, combat is pretty seamless. I have a good mix of different types of heals and different spells/dots to play with. It truly is a lot of fun.

My guild captured it's first keep the other day, and although I'm a little iffy on the details of what that takes to do, and what that means, it seems like it's pretty fun. So as I continue to find time I'm really enjoying leveling up and am looking forward to some more of the bigger PvP content, and really looking forward to trying out some PvE... will comment on all that in a few weeks after I'm a bit bigger and have tried some of it out.

So sorry for the long post, but thought I'd share my thoughts.

Peace.

Rhalin.

If you entered a scenario within an RvR zone you will be ported back to a war camp when you leave. This same concept applies to logging off and on while in an RvR area.

PQ's definately have better rewards than the renown gear. That seems counter-intuitive to me, but I've read that renown gear becomes teh shit at max level.

The other nice thing about the scenarios is that you do get some nice xp, renown points and cash, even if you lose.

I skipped chapter 10 and 11.. just finished 12.. because I couldn't find ready groups doing them and didn't want to sit around waiting for people.

The other thing you'll find is that you can't level up quickly enough just doing a single story line. It becomes pronounced at about rank 20, so you'll have to do a couple quest hubs in one pairing, then go to another and quest there also.. then after you've ranked up a bit, you can go to the next hub in a couple of different pairings as well.

I've had a history of being too unwilling to abandon sucky quests. I don't have that problem now.. if it's crappy, I'll dump it and go do other ones. The game does get a bit grindy for my taste sometimes. It really slows down a lot in the early 20's.

Playing my Sorcerer is either feast or famin. I need tanks to keep the other team at bay and bunched up.. otherwise, I end up at the front line and get creamed. Healers tend to ignore me so it's difficult to unload because of the backlash. It really is all about the position, but if I'm playing with some bad players, it's awful.

One other thing that you might encounter, which totally stumped me.

Once you start getting mastery points, you allocate them in the tree you want, and you can get the abilities. The thing I couldn't figure out is how to actually get the ability once you've allocated points in the tree. Turns out, you have to "buy" the ability with one point (by clicking on it), even after you've allocated points into the tree up to that level.

It's kind of weird and not at all intuitive.

...

Oh.. and guild taxes just went up a bunch.. so check your tithe rate and lower it.

Yeah I didn't get that about the trees either... kind of screwed all the builds I was playing with. :)

Did they go over the 10% they raised it to the other day? And it doesn't really matter that much, my tithe as been at 0.. :) and besides it's only what you pick up, I get most of my g's from vendor and quest rewards.

Yeah apparently they're something like 6g per hour to keep...

I haven't figured out what all the benefits of the keep are yet, but I imagine they're good.

Ya.. I guess the guild ranks faster with keeps..

There's really not much use for gold in the game. It's one of the things I like about it.. so I don't mind.

Aye, so far anyway... who knows what end-game is like if there's big money sinks like in wow.

I think (and I'm no expert) that end game is running some instances, plus much more open RvR to open city sieges, and the instancing that comes along with that.. There's no item crafting, or much else to spend money on, except if you want something like an uber talisman or whatever. We'll just be levelling up renown ranks as well. There isn't even any repair costs..

I think the time sinks will be in doing end-game quests for armor sets. I think it works like you achieve some RvR goal so that you can get a quest that tells you to go kill some hero NPC or other.. and you have to get a group together and get it done, and you get one piece. I'm not sure, but I think they may be in instances. It sounds like a pretty good mechanic to me.

I guess "time sink" isn't a good way to put it. It sounds fun.. not like doing dailies.

Sounds like fun, why dont you write one?

If we let Bob write it, itll be 400 pages long and never reach a conclusion. And if they let me write it, itll be a quarter page of mostly actionable comment with about 6 weeks of forum argument afterwards.
